Saturday, 20 August 2022. Carton blanks pushed to the edges, the production floor cleared, and the warehouse turned into an arena for Indonesia’s 77th Independence Day. Red and white everywhere, a kerupuk-eating contest, and a rope-and-bottle team game.
Some people were still in masks that day — a habit that hadn’t quite been put down yet. In the kerupuk photo the mask is only pulled under the chin, back up as soon as the turn ended.
The prizes weren’t trophies: umbrellas, electric fans, boxed household goods. Things that actually get used at home, carried out the same afternoon.
