1. Proof of quality, not claims of quality
Ask for evidence you can document: certifications (ISO 9001 for quality management, ISO 14001 for environmental), and batch-to-batch consistency. For an automotive supply chain, documentation you can actually use during a customer audit is far more valuable than the word “quality”.
2. MOQ flexibility and customization
New parts and small volumes are often turned down by large suppliers. Ask about the real MOQ and whether they can build from zero to the part’s specification — not just catalog sizes.
3. Reliability and delivery schedule
Packaging that arrives late is as bad as packaging that doesn’t arrive at all. Ask about capacity, lead time, and (this one is often missed) whether they offer a stock service / VMI (they hold the buffer, you pull it per call-off). This is what keeps the line running when demand rises and falls.
4. One roof for cartons and polybags
If you need both, a single supplier with one QC standard and one delivery schedule reduces the risk of “two vendors blaming each other” when a problem comes up.
5. Printing and identification capability
Marking, part codes, and branding on the packaging matter for identification on the line. Make sure their printing capability fits your needs.
